This young man, called Dantès, is the first mate in a ship called "The Pharaon". He made a stop on Isle of Elba where Napoloeon Bonaparte was living in. He arrives in Marseilles and he meets his father and his fianceé. He's going to get married, with a girl called Mercedes. At the next day they're having the bethrotal feast and he's arrested in the middle of the celebration.

A guy called Gerard Villefort, who's a judge, he interrogates Dantès and they found out he had a letter from Bonaparte to Villefort's dad. Villefort burns the letter and Dantès stays in prison. The next day Dantès is transferred to the prison Château d' If and he demands a conversation with the governer but instead he's sent to a worst jail.

Dantès tries to find the way of going out of prison and he decides not to eat for several days for him to die, but when he listens that another prisoner is trying to escape he starts eating. When his strengths are back he starts planning his own escape and he digs below his bed. He quits on digging and he hears a voice calling him. The voice was from a priest called Farria.

The priest tells him for him not to continue digging that he'll go to his jail. Dantès really happy obeys him and when the days pass by he becomes nervous until he hears Farria's voice. Farria digged upto Dantès jail and he invited him to his jail. Farria starts talking about what happened to him before going to prison and during his time in prison.

Dantès and Farria start planning an escape out of jail. Farria starts teaching Dantès many languages, about history until the point Dantès becomes really intelligent and Farria's best friend. Farria had a treasure in the Isle of Monte Cristo and they were going to divide it into two, but Farria dies. Dantès escapes from the prison and goes to the Isle of Monte Cristo.
